When a young woman of Mexican and other Hispanic descent reaches her 15th birthday, she is honored with a celebration called
Fiesta Quince Anos or Quinceanera (also known as Quinceanos).
The names come from the
Spanish words
quince for "fifteen" and años for "years"
This is an old and revered tradition. The ritual is several hundred years old and traces its beginnings to the Aztec Indians of South America. We started celebrating it in the United States beginning around the 1930s. Traditions from many cultures are woven into the Quinceanera celebration.
Fifteen was the age when many young women left their family home to become wives and mothers. A Latina girl enters her Quinceañera as a child, but emerges as a young woman with all new responsibilities.
